“Jesus Is Not a Means to Our Ends” John 6:1-21

Nine-year-old Danny came bursting out of Sunday School like a wild stallion.  His eyes were darting in every direction as he tried to locate either mom or dad.  Finally, after a quick search, he grabbed his Daddy by the leg and yelled, “Man, that story of Moses and all those people crossing the Red Sea was great!”  His father looked down, smiled, and asked the boy to tell him about it.

“Not Understanding Jesus” John 3:1-17

What we say is not always what is heard or understood.  Often we will have a conversation with someone, and we will say something with a particular intended meaning, yet the other person will receive a different message.  We receive messages through our own filters.  As a person who was raised in Georgia, I have […]

“This Man Is Not Normal” John 4:5-18

Dear Abby was a syndicated advice newspaper column from 1956-2000 written by a woman whose pen name was Abigail Van Buren; the column has continued since 2002 with Abby’s daughter providing advice through the Chicago Sun Times.  Years ago, Amy Mulrooney wrote a letter to Dear Abby hoping that the stranger who helped her at a busy airport in Washington state would see her letter and know how much she appreciated his generosity.

“Guided by the Spirit” Luke 2:25-35

I realize that this is a time for lots of celebrations for many of you.  Since tonight is New Year’s Eve, many will stay up past midnight to bring in the New Year.  Many of you hope to be celebrating victories for your football teams tomorrow, especially those of you whose favorite colors are red, crimson, or orange!

“Love Stories” Luke 2:1-14

When I go to the movie theater, Redbox, Netflix, Amazon, or other streaming sites to find a movie, I prefer something that makes me laugh, lifts me up, or makes me think.  I don’t like scary movies or dark films; for me, there’s too much darkness in the world for me to invest in a couple of hours of more darkness.
